2 things we had to get used to this week - pierre noire conte (3B), and our first male model! yeah it was quite....different, but i got used to both soon enough. ;) the conte is much darker and less forgiving than the vine charcoal; once you put it down, it's nearly impossible to erase. however, it is definitely less messy to use! sharpening though, is a pain in the ass. everyone in class has broken it multiple times while sharpening and/or drawing. expensive tool.
practicing using the conte:
then onto the model. males are tougher to draw than females - not much curves or counter curves to draw from, just kinda boxy. not sure i'm liking this new tool/subject combo.

then the next class time we moved onto boxes. these are used on the head, rib cage, and pelvis, showing the direction they are facing. on an average person, the head is about the same height as the pelvis, which is about 2/3 of the rib cage. in contrast to the ovals, these are put in after we do the actual figures. i had a really easy time with this, while most of my classmates struggled, even ones that are much better artists than me. it's just very intuitive for me. i guess everyone visualizes things differently.
